Daylight Savings time gives us an extra hour of daylight, meaning we get to spend some more time outside. As the weather warms back up, it’s important to conduct some routine checks around your home to make sure that everything is working properly - both inside and outside. Here are a few things you should check around your house as we dive into Spring.

Gutters

Remove any potential leaves, sticks, and debris from your gutters that could potentially cause clogs. If water builds up and overflows from your gutters, it can cause wood to rot and significant damage to your home’s trim or roof. Cleaning your gutters is also necessary to prepare for the heavier spring rains.

Roof Inspection

You can do a general roof inspection without having to climb up there yourself. If needed, use binoculars to spot any signs of problems. Look over your roof for any signs of missing, broken, or damaged splinters which could potentially lead to water damage. Also be sure to check around any chimneys to ensure that there are no signs of missing or cracked bricks.

Deck and Patios

The nicer weather means you may want to entertain guests at an outdoor barbeque or get-together. Before having anyone over, make sure that your deck and patio areas are in excellent shape. Start by clearing off any debris on your deck and check for any broken or splintered wood. If the wood is faded, it may be time to stain and seal it again. Pressure wash your patio and sidewalks to keep them looking nice and refreshed.

Trim Trees and Shrubs

Take advantage of the nice Spring days and trim back any overgrown trees or shrubs. Remove any tree branches that are hanging over the house. Prune any dead leaves and branches on shrubs to improve your plants’ health and appearance.

Check Faucets

After the last freeze of the season, check over any faucets to look for signs of freeze damage. Inspect hoses for any cracks and make sure that they’re properly sealed.

HVAC

Preparing your HVAC system for the warmer weather is essential to keep it running smoothly throughout the summer. Call a professional to inspect your HVAC unit and be sure to change your air filters about once a month.
