One of the best tools for putting out flames is the fire extinguisher. Many people don't know how to use an extinguisher, but learning is a simple process. Stay prepared by following these tips to safely put out a fire in your Knoxville, TN, home.

Determine the Fire Type

Put safety first by calling 911 and alerting anyone else in the building about the fire. Leave the building immediately if a fire situation is too unsafe for you to handle on your own.

If it's safe to stay on-site, quickly assess the cause of the fire. Then, reference your extinguisher's label. Each label shows the types of fire it can put out in pictures and words. A kitchen fire caused by flammable oils requires a Class K fire extinguisher. Multipurpose extinguishers cover fires A through C, including:

  • Wood
  • Paper
  • Fabric
  • Flammable liquids
  • Electrical wiring or equipment

Vacate the building and wait outside for help to arrive if you don't have the correct extinguisher for the job. If you do have the correct extinguisher, use the P.A.S.S. technique explained below:

  1. Pull the Pin - Remove the pin located at the top of the extinguisher.
  2. Aim Low - Point the extinguisher nozzle at the lowest point of the fire.
  3. Squeeze the Handle - Grasp the handle of the extinguisher. The fire retardant will come out as long as you hold down the handle.
  4. Sweep  - Move the extinguisher nozzle from one edge of the fire to the other. Focus the stream on the base of the fire. Don't stop until the fire is out or you need to leave because it's unsafe.

Monitor the site to ensure the fire is completely out. Follow the last three steps if it ignites again.
