What is mold?

Mold is a type of fungus that thrives off of moisture. Mold can be found outdoors, where it is beneficial to nature, but mold can also find its way inside your home where it becomes a major issue. The reason mold is a major issue in your home is due to the potential health risks that it poses to your household. Mold releases spores while it is growing, which travel through the air and can be inhaled.

Where does mold grow?

Mold grows in damp areas, such as areas with high humidity or that have experienced a leak. This could be a leak from a roof or window. Mold growth can also be the result of flooding. Rooms in your house that could be at higher risk for mold growth include bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces.

How do I know there is mold in my home?

When mold is growing in your home, it appears as irregularly shaped dots or circles, often in clusters, on the surface it is growing on. Mold grows in a variety of colors such as pink, brown, white, blue, green, gray, yellow, or black. Mold will either have a fuzzy or slimy appearance. Mold often produces a strong, musty odor that can also help to locate the source of mold growth.

What health risks does mold pose?

Due to the different types of mold, some types may pose different health risks than others. As the microscopic mold spores travel through the air, they can be inhaled and cause a number of respiratory issues in your household. These issues can be more serious in those with asthma or an allergy to mold.

Furthermore, mold can pose more serious risks to children, the elderly, or others with health that may already be compromised. According to the CDC, “the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; with asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that immune-mediated condition.”
